A step-by-step guide to the GST and how it will affect business is now available on video, Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody announced today.

Titled Goods and Services Tax - Information for Business, the video is directed at small and medium sized businesses, and is available free via the Business Tax Reform Infoline on 13 24 78. Copies will also be available on free loan from Video Ezy outlets from mid-April.

ABC television will broadcast the video at 1pm on Thursday, 6 April. It runs for just under an hour and incorporates captions for the hearing impaired.

"The video is a succinct compilation of all the material we have put out in print and on the web site to date and I urge all business people, even if they think they are across the issues, to spend the time viewing this," said Mr Carmody.

The video focuses on how the GST works and how it is calculated and also covers key components such as the Australian Business Number (ABN), the Business Activity Statement (BAS), Pay As You Go (PAYG), transitional arrangements, tax invoices, accounting requirements and other tax reform measures such as the Luxury Car Tax and the Wine Equalisation Tax.

The subject matter is presented in clear-cut information modules, supported by graphics and question-and-answer sessions.

Another video dealing specifically with the ABN, The Australian Business Number - the Key to Your Business, is also available and three others (on record keeping, the BAS and PAYG) will become available later in April. All are free and can be ordered by phoning 13 24 78.
