The Senate Select Committee on Superannuation and Financial Services will be holding a Public Hearing in Melbourne and Brisbane on matters relating to superannuation and financial services. The Committee is inquiring into:
- prudential supervision and consumer protection for superannuation, banking and financial services;
- the opportunities and constraints for Australia to become a centre for the provision of global financial services; and
- enforcement of the Superannuation Guarantee Charge.
On Thursday 15 June, in Melbourne, witnesses will be addressing all terms of reference. On Friday 16 June, in Brisbane, witnesses will primarily be addressing the matters relating to prudential supervision and consumer protection.
The primary purpose of the hearing in Brisbane is to conduct an historical evaluation of some case studies to establish what deficiencies in the law enabled certain practices to occur and what needs to be done to ensure that such practices do not occur in the future. The Committee’s interest in certain cases should in no way be seen as a reflection on current fund practices.
The programs for the Committee’s two days of hearings are attached.
