The Tax Office will open its telephone infolines this weekend to help business and the community make any last minute preparations for The New Tax System starting at 12.01am this Saturday (1 July).

Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody today announced extended hours for the weekend with telephone advice available from 8am to 8pm Saturday (1 July) and 10am to 3pm Sunday (2 July).

"Our call centre operators in Melbourne, Penrith, Northbridge, Upper Mt Gravatt and Burnie will be ready to respond to inquiries during the extended hours this weekend," Mr Carmody said.

"Free phone advice for business is available on 13 24 78 and for consumers on 13 61 40. Anyone wanting to check the progress of their Australian Business Number application can call 1300 137 226.

"We are expecting about 15,000 calls this weekend and the extension of our call centre service aims to give taxpayers the help they need to make the transition to The New Tax System as smoothly as possible.

"Some of the most common questions we are receiving include inquiries about Pay As You Go, record keeping and enquires about GST, including how to calculate GST."

Mr Carmody announced the extended call centre hours while visiting the Tax Office's Melbourne call centre which celebrates its first year of operation this week. The Tax Office's call centres have already responded to over 2.4 million calls from the public about tax reform.

Taxpayers can also get extensive information about The New Tax System by logging onto the Internet site at www.taxreform.ato.gov.au which is currently receiving 700,000 hits a day and will soon reach the 100 million mark for site visitors.
